Lake Tarawera Field Trip (16.02.24)

A few days back, I was fortunate to assist Masters student Sarah with her research into algae growth in Lake Tarawera. Historically, Lake Tarawera residents have had issues with sewerage from their septic tanks overflowing and leaching into the lake during flooding.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council has come up with a solution to join residents of Lake Tarawera and other lakes nearby to the sewerage system infrastructure. Sarah's research at Lake Tarawera is to measure the algae growth in the Lake every month and take samples and measurements before and after the sewerage system is put in place to see the impacts of the infrastructure on the health of Lake Tarawera. Today, we were testing the equipment and taking initial measurements.
