Seaweed testing with Maike (12.02.24)
On Monday, I assisted Maike, a student at the Coastal Marine Field Station (Waikato University). Maike tested the photosynthetic performance of seaweed at low tide conditions. Maike used a fluorometer to measure the photosynthetic performance. She tested different water temperatures, air, humidity and light spectrum. Maike has found different performances between different seaweed species. Tomorrow we will collect different species of seaweed from Karewa Island like Carpopyllum maschalocarpum, Dictyota kunthii, Xiphophora chondrophyllia, ulva spp, Hormosira banksii. Seaweed species can be viewed at this link: https://niwa.co.nz/oceans/marine-identification-guides-and-fact-sheets/beautiful-browns
